Dentures Over Implants
Whether you are missing a few teeth or all of your teeth, dentures provide a quick and cost-effective treatment for tooth replacement. However, as most denture wearers know, partial and complete dentures pose daily and long term challenges for their users. Dental experts estimate that the bite power of a completely edentulous (toothless) patient goes down from about 500 pounds per square inch to approximately 100-150 psi. Unlike our natural teeth which are secured with dental roots, conventional dentures rely on suction to hold them in place. The resulting decline in bite power limits the types of food denture wearers can eat, thus reducing their enjoyment of good food and the nutritional value of their meals. Other daily issues include slipping of dentures which can lead to sore spots, food getting under dentures and the need to use messy adhesives for extra stability.
Conventional dentures can also contribute to serious long term oral health care problems for the denture wearer, the most serious of which is the accelerated loss of bone and gum tissue which edentulous patients experience. Missing teeth and roots can result in the loss of 2-5% of bone and gum tissue per year. This anatomical change is quite visible and makes ongoing adjustment and replacement of dentures necessary. One of the many benefits of dental implants is that they act as root replacements and help maintain the bone structure and density needed for a stronger bite and better long term oral health.

Today’s dental implants are made of a surgical-grade titanium alloy similar to the metal composite used in synthetic joint replacement. Titanium is biocampatible, which means the body accepts it as if it were natural tissue. To improve the fusion of the implant to the jaw bone, implants are coated with HA (Hydroxyapetite). This coating, which is made primarily of calcium, enhances the ability of the bone to knit with the surface of the implant – a process known as osteointegration. In effect, the jawbone grips the implant as if it were a natural tooth root, creating a solid anchor for the prosthetic teeth that will be attached to it. There is a wide range of prosthetic teeth with varying degrees of hardness, lustre and opacity – all of which come in different shades and are barely distinguishable from natural teeth. Your Denturist will custom make your dentures to suit your needs and looks.

There are 4 Major Types of Implant Solutions Available Today:
Removable, Implant Anchored Lower Overdenture
One of the simplest and most cost effective implant treatments available today, the removable implant anchored overdenture can secure removable lower dentures and significantly enhance bite power. Two implants are placed at the front of the lower jaw (mandible) and then a full set of lower dentures are custom-made to attach to them. Prosthetic teeth can usually be placed on the implants the same day that the implant procedure is completed. Once the implants have integrated with the bone in the lower jaw, a permanent lower denture is crafted. As the name of this treatment option suggests, the overdenture is removable by the patient for daily cleaning. The placement of just 2 implants at the front of the mandible reduces slippage and provides a firmer grip for a stronger bite making this treatment option one of the most popular alternatives to conventional lower dentures.
The All-on-4® dental implant treatment also known as Teeth-in-a-Day, was developed by leading Implant maker Nobel Biocare in close cooperation with its inventor, Portugese Dentist, Dr. Paolo Malo. It was designed for the completely edentulous patient and is comprised of a fixed or removable upper and lower denture each secured to 4 implants embedded in the deepest, strongest part of the upper and lower jaws (maxilla and mandible). These deeply embedded implants act as pillars, anchoring the dentures for a much stronger bite. Once the implants are placed by a dentist a temporary set of dentures can be placed on them the same day. After the newly placed implants have integrated with the bone, a permanent set of dentures is made to replace the temporary ones. The All-on-4® Treatment has a very high success rate and has proven to be an efficient and effective restoration solution for the edentulous patient. Ask your Denturist for more information about this treatment if you feel that you or someone you know could benefit from it.
Single and Multiple Tooth Replacement
Dentures over Implants can also be used for single and multiple tooth replacements. When more than one tooth is missing, 2 implants can be used to secure 2-5 teeth in a single row (bridge). Single tooth replacements are usually fixed to the implant whereas bridges can be removable or fixed. It’s easy to see why Dentists and Denturists consider dentures over implants to be the ideal treatment for tooth replacement, and why patients are reporting a much higher level of satisfaction with their dentures over implants than patients with conventional dentures.
